Small Idiosyncrasies that can Catch out the Composer

There are a few little issues that can make life rather difficult for you if you are not aware of them.

You may have noticed that the ranges of the instruments vary as to the bottom note.

Leaving aside the Hecklephon for the moment the oboe is the only one of the family that can be guaranteed to have a bottom Bb. Almost all of the other instruments stop at a bottom B. Occasionally a cor anglais will have the bottom Bb but this is not standard at all. I suggest therefore that you consider the bottom note of each instrument, except the oboe, to be a B. Very occasionally there is an oboe with a bottom A - this is very, very rare. Ignore it!
